Alusta pavilion Kerava
2024
During Spring and Summer 2024 Alusta got its first sibling at Kerava, Finland.
Alusta 2.0. was built as part of the Festival of Future Construction. The pavilion is built in a new housing area where it will serve as shared space for the new more than human community. This time we worked with local vocational school students in the construction process. Students from a local children’s art school made drinking vessels for birds and insects. Pollinator friendly plantings were designed to fit this new context.
Circular economy became the focus point in selecting construction materials. Materials include recycled poroton blocks, bricks made from waste materials and lime mortar for easy disassembly at the end of the planned 10-year lifecycle. The soil used in the plantings is a mixture of local leaf compost and biochar. The biochar is made of local waste bio mass, and captures carbon into the soil for centuries while the manufacturing process produces clean energy for the local district heating system.
Humans have built the frame for the space, now the plants will take over. Vines will grow to shape the enclosure and create views to the surrounding landscape. The pavilion is a free space, always open for encounters for all species.
The pavilion was built in collaboration with the City of Kerava, Keuda vocational school, Jalotus ry, Kerava art school, Wienerberger Oy and Kekkilä-BVB.
